Using live innovation challenges to develop global leaders

Panasonic’s Global Leadership Programme brings leadership development and innovation work together. Working with Imperial Executive Education, MJA designed an intensive experience in which cross-functional, international participants work in small groups on live innovation challenges while being exposed to different ways of seeing opportunity, uncertainty and execution. The journey combines futures and context, innovation and entrepreneurship, leadership, customer insight and practical experimentation. Participants work with faculty, explore innovation ecosystems, test assumptions and progressively strengthen the business case and story around their challenge. The project process runs before, through and beyond the intensive, so the challenge is not an end-of-programme exercise. It is the organising spine for learning: participants have to collaborate across functions and geographies, integrate competing perspectives and turn ideas into propositions that can withstand challenge. Innovation work therefore becomes a vehicle for leadership development — creating deliberate stretch around both the quality of the idea and the way the team works together.
